Festo proximity sensors are some of the best on the market. As Festo Technical Distributors we offer their complete catalogue through our online store. A proximity sensor detects the location and distance of adjacent objects. They are used in many applications, including car parking sensors, computer circuit boards and smart phones – but in our context they also play an important role in hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
There are upwards of 15 types of proximity sensor and many subdivisions of each type, the difference being the component’s sensing mechanism. Each sensor generates an electromagnetic field and then senses changes in that field to extrapolate the position, distance and relative movement of an object. The field itself may be magnetic – in the case of magnetic proximity fuses – or the result of infrared radiation, ultrasound or sonar. Photoelectric and laser beams are used by some models. Each sensor operates over a nominal range, which varies by model and application.
Types Of Festo Sensor
Pneumatic proximity sensors are cylindrical closed valves that are used to detect stroke positions on pneumatic pistons. The Festo range includes SME, SMT and SMBR cylinder sensors suitable for a variety of pneumatic systems.
The sensors are electrically powered and are available with a variety of cord lengths, electrical connections and insulation voltages from 50 to 250 V. Connector exits can be lateral or vertical. Different sensors are compatible with C slot and T slot systems, as well as semi-rotary drive technologies.
